By Antony Reynaert

Attention fellow guitarist!

If you are looking for a few tips and tricks on blues guitar playing this article is NOT for you.

But if you are looking to get a clear view on where your blues guitar playing is at right now...

And how the road ahead looks like...

This might be the most important article you ever read!

Here is the deal:

Playing a few blues guitar licks and riffs here and there is easy…

But mastering blues guitar playing as a complete style is hard…

…VERY hard.

Yes, Learning A Simple Scale And 'Forcing It' On Top Of Blues Chords Like So Many Aspiring Blues Guitarists Do Is Easy...

And yes, learning a blues riff 'here' and a chord 'there' is something that anyone can do without much thought...

But Understanding The Blues As A Complete Style And Delving Deep Into Each Intrinsic Part You Need To Learn Is... Well... SOMETHING ELSE.

But here is the good news:

Once you understand a few key things (I'll tell you what these are in a minute) learning to understand blues guitar on a deep level is:

  • A logical process of just 'doing the work' by focussing on the right exercises. If you know exactly what to practice in order to improve at every step of the way there is literally nothing that can hold your progress down. The cruel reality is that only 6% of all guitar players make it to the advanced levels, because they don't follow a logical step-by-step process that takes them from where they are now to complete mastery over their guitar playing.
  • A great way to really understand the guitar (because in order to really understand blues music, you need to understand important building blocks like arpeggios, how scales and chords go together, how to target the best notes when soloing).
  • A craft that is deeply satisfying to study. After studying blues guitar masters for over 20 years what I found is that learning to understand blues guitar on a deep level opens up many doors to other styles. In this regard, mastering blues guitar is the IDEAL breeding ground to really understand other styles such as jazz, rock, country, etc.

Ever heard someone say: "If you learn to play the blues, you can play all other styles"?

In a way, they are head on.

But I can hear you think: "if blues is a complex style to master, where do I start?"

This is a great question:

"Where Do You Start Learning This Complex Style Without Wasting Thousands Of Hours Of Practice Time On Things That Aren't Really Coherent?"

Many guitar players contact me with similar questions, that more or less come down to the same question:

"Hi Antony Reynaert,

What do you recommend to practice to improve my blues guitar playing?"

Here is my reply to this great question:

In order to know what you should practice exactly at every step of the way you need a plan!

You need a blueprint that tells you exactly what you need to practice at each step in your development as a guitarist.

That is why I present to you The 5 Levels Of Blues Guitar Mastery:

Before we can talk about how to use the system that is layed out in the the image above, we need to look at what most aspiring blues guitarists do when they want to master blues guitar.

How Almost All Blues Guitar Students Get Trapped In A 'Cul Du Sac' Of Little Progress And How To Make Sure This Doesn't Happen In Your Own Development

Most guitar students who aspire to master blues guitar start out this way:

First, if they are smart enough to realize that a simple minor pentatonic scale shape isn't a passport to understand the guitar, they try to decode the neck of the guitar.

They usually start of learning where every note on the guitar is:

Second, they learn how the neck of the guitar works (and how to build intervals):

If they are lucky enough to have a great teacher that breaks down the neck of the guitar AND is also an expert blues guitar player (which is rare), they now can take things a step further.

They start to realize that their favorite blues guitarists aren't using the minor pentatonic scale to play over blues chords.

This Is, Most Of The Time, The Moment They See The Light In Terms Of How Some Scales Aren't Really The Best Fit To Play Over Their Beloved Blues Chords...

Paradoxically these scales are the go-to scale for almost all beginner blues guitar students, but it very often imprisons them inside of this pentatonic box pattern for years.

One of my guitar teaching collegae friends, a very respected master teacher that leaves in New Zeeland, rightfully calls the minor pentatonic scale the "death scale".

No kiddin'…

So once those guitar students learn to unstuck themselves from this so-called death scale, they start to learn about the all-important arpeggios.

But here is the most important thing to understand:

Even in the very unlikely case they ever get this far, they are still missing a big part of the big picture of how everything is connected…

…which is like building a house on quicksand.

This is because:

Blues Scales, Lead Guitar Playing And Fretboard Orientation Are Still A Small Part Of The Entire Blues Guitar Mastery EcoSystem

Take a look at the pyramid again:

Many people don't have:

  • A solid foundation of guitar technique they can rely on - Level 1
  • A trained ear or the right exercises that will get them there (specifically for blues guitar) - Level 2
  • Solid rhythm guitar skills so they can lay down a rhythm part that gets bands begging them to join them without even auditioning. A lot of guitar players are focussed on improving their lead guitar skills, but couldn't save their lives with playing a rhythm guitar riff that sounds 'bad to the bones' - Level 3
